The Bio4Products concept was presented to international experts during the biannual meeting of IEA Bioenergy Task 34: Direct Thermochemical Liquefaction in the Netherlands last week.
Hans Heeres from BTG Biomass Technology Group gave participants an overview of the project, which aims to demonstrate the thermal fractionation of biomass via fast pyrolysis to produce lignin and sugars for use by process industries.
IEA Bioenergy Task 34 unites the leading researchers and commercial entities active in the field of biomass pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction. Bio4Products coordinator BTG are a member of the task and hosted the meeting.
Other members come from Canada (CanmetENERGY, Natural Resources Canada), Finland (VTT Technical Research Centre), Germany (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT)), New Zealand (Scion), Sweden (SP Energy Technology), and the USA (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)).
The purpose of the Task is to:
- Provide support for commercialisation through standards development
- Validate applicable analytical methods for product evaluation
- Facilitate information exchange with stakeholders
- Support techno-economic assessment of liquefaction technologies.
